II. Narrative Description of Community

Income Poverty Data
Of the inhabitants of Providence, 38,453 are unemployed and 83,303 are without health insurance coverage. 14% of Providence is comprised of families below poverty level. In comparison, 10.6% Rhode Island is comprised of families below poverty level and the United States as whole is comprised of 11.7%. In Providence, per capita income is 25, 701, which is pretty in keeping with the per capita incomes of Rhode Island as a whole and the United States, respectively.
Race and Ethnicity Data
Within the community of Providence, 65.7% of its inhabitants are white, 8.8% are black, and 19.3% are Hispanic. Rhode Island, in comparison, is comprised of a population that is 1.7% white, 6% black, and 12.8% Hispanic. On a much broader scale, the United States is 74.1% white, 12.6% black, and 16.7% Hispanic. The other races are not as abundantly found in the populations. It is interesting to note that 3.2% of Providence is comprised of people of 2 races or more, Rhode Island is comprised of 2.7% of people of 2 races or more and only 2.8% of the United States is comprised of people of 2 or more races.
